José María is a career diplomat. He has an intense professional career in both the public and private sectors. He has been Spanish Ambassador three times: in Moscow, Islamabad and Vilnius. In 2018 he returned to the diplomatic career and was appointed ambassador to Vilnius. Upon completion of his mission in Lithuania, on 7 September 2022, he joined the Spanish Embassy in London as Minister Counsellor for Cultural and Scientific Affairs. The promotion and presence of vibrant Spanish culture and science in the post-Brexit scenario is now his main occupation.
José María Robles Fraga has a degree in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid and joined the Spanish diplomatic service in 1982. As a career diplomat he has lived in Honduras, Paris, Russia, Pakistan and Lithuania and is currently stationed in the United Kingdom.
He is a member of the Advisory Board of the magazine Política Exterior and of the European Council of Foreign Relations (ECFR). He has also held positions of political responsibility and has worked in the private sector, during his time as Director of Institutional Relations and Protocol at Banco Santander.
