Maria is the Gail E. Kendall Professor of Mechanical Engineering (1978), faculty director for academics at MIT D-Lab and founder and director of the MIT Ideation Lab.

As deputy dean for engineering, she is focused on strengthening undergraduate and graduate academic programming and contributing to strategic initiatives at the school and institute level such as design, enhancing student experiences and promoting opportunities for faculty support and mentoring, work she has already begun through past and current appointments in departments and institutes.

Yang received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from MIT (1991), after which he moved to Stanford University, where he received his master's degree (1994) and PhD (2000) in the design division of the mechanical engineering department. He joined the MIT faculty in 2007.

Yang is an internationally recognised leader in design theory and processes, with a particular focus on the role of design representations. Her research focuses on the early-stage processes used to create successful designs, from consumer products to complex large-scale engineering systems.

Yang has made significant advances in characterising the relationship between design process and outcome. This work has been recognised with an NSF CAREER award, and in 2013 she was named a Fellow of ASME in recognition of her engineering achievements. With a focus on teaching students how to discover ways to improve design in the world around them, Yang created 2. 00 Introduction to Design, and has taught other undergraduate courses, such as 2.00B Toy Product Design and 2.009 Product Engineering Processes, and the graduate courses 2.739/15.783 Product Design and Development, in collaboration with Sloan and Rhode Island School of Design, and 2.729/EC.729 D-Lab: Design at Scale.
